So when you said "free," you really meant "not so much"

The other week we finally signed up for the DVR package provided by Time Warner Cable (more on this in a minute).

While on the website, I noticed that the combo package I'd subscribed to for years said it includes HBO On Demand, even thought it's never been available to us whenever I flipped past it.  So while on the phone ordering the DVR, I asked about it, and was told that it would be $4 extra a month if we wanted HBO On Demand.  I told her on the website that it looked like it was included, but she insisted that it wasn't.

Not satisfied with the difference between the support rep and what was listed on the website, I sent an e-mail off to the cable company's online help address, and sure enough, a few days later I got an e-mail back saying that as of 1/1 it's included, that the customer service rep must just not have been updated on it, and that they'd added it to my subscription - just reboot the cable box and I should see it.  And sure enough, I did!

And so I continued along enjoying my new On Demand capabilities in ignorant bliss until I got my cable bill this week.  Upon which I discovered that as of January 1st, the base rate for my combo is...

...wait for it ...

$4 more than it used to be!

So much for something for nothing, huh?

So, all that aside, I really am loving the DVR capability.  Although, I have to say, now that we've had it a week, it is a lot more fun once you actually have shows taped on it!  I've found the pause feature more useful than anything, as well as the ability to instantly record a show (and a series) without having to find a tape, hope it's in the right spot, find the child-lock key to the TV cabinet, find the VCR remote, etc.

And, speaking of TV, I caught the first episode of the new Terminator:  Sarah Connors Chronicles last night (watching it over the course of an hour and a half, thanks to that new DVR).  I have to say, I was very impressed (and so far might even like it better than the 2nd Terminator movie, which never quite lived up to the hype or its predecessor, at least for me.)
