Raccoons in the News
On the topic of "The Web really does have everything..."

Aside:It feels a little weird to follow up the post on Kurt Vonnegut with one on, well, Raccoons in the News, but then again something has to follow the other post, and I have to think this is the sort of story and weird coincidence that he'd approve of anyway.

While on the Daily Sun website looking at their coverage of Kurt Vonnegut's passing, I noticed what I thought was a news story on the right-hand sidebar about a girl falling into a gorge and landing on a raccoon. This stuck out for me because I remember a news story from when I was at Cornell about a student falling into a gorge and being saved when she landed on a raccoon (don't ask me why I remembered it). Now Cornell does have a lot of students and a lot of gorges (and I'm sure it's fair share of raccoons), but I figure the odds of this type of thing happening more than once are pretty slim.
I click on the link and discover it's not a new news story but rather a forum posting by someone who attended Cornell back in the early 90's (when I was there) who was trying to see if anyone else recalled that story.
I was about to post a response to say that I remembered it, too, when I noticed that someone had already Googled it and included a link to a "Raccoons in the News" site that had a copy of the UPI article on the story. (And, after reading it again, I'm pretty sure I know the person who wrote it, because I remember people giving him a hard time a few years afterwards about the "The raccoon is recovering at a local animal shelter" line.)
Which really just goes to show you that the Web does have everything. And so, without further ado...
