Prelationships and Preunions
Scott Monty over on the Social Media Marketing blog gives names to some of the thoughts I've had for a while now:
When I was at SXSW recently, I noted that I was meeting people for the first time, but I felt like I had been part of their lives for a long time. With presence applications and frequent blog posts, we end up sharing so much of our lives with our online communities. The result is that we're forming what I like to call prelationships - meaningful interactions with people before we ever meet them. Then of course, when we do meet, it's a preunion.
I know I've certainly felt this way meeting other bloggers for the first time at the last few Lotuspheres, and is one of the reasons I think there's so much value in blogging not only work-related material, but talking about the more personal side of things, too. (Something I know I need to do a better job of myself.)
