One thousand million 1Gb memory sticks

How's this for an image.  Picture one thousand million 1Gb memory sticks... and now picture filling all of them with data each day!

This is the amount of data - one Exabyte each day - expected to come out of the new Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope project, and IBM will be partnering with Western Australia's International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) on the technology needed to manage the vast amounts of data produced by the new telescope.

To provide another data point on just how much data that is, "In its first hour alone, the SKA will generate more information than is currently held in the entire World Wide Web," explained Western Australian Minister for Commerce, Troy Buswell. Once operational, the levels of data produced by the SKA will be bigger than any other research project in the world.
