Lotus Sametime 8 - ad hoc FAQ

Based on questions posed to me directly from inside/outside IBM or asked (or answered) by fellow bloggers, I thought I'd post some ad hoc FAQs that have come up since we announced and shipped the Lotus Sametime 8 products this week.  If you have additional questions, post them below or drop me a note ( and I'll update the FAQ.

Q:  Is Sametime Entry the same as the limited use code I have/will use for by Lotus Notes entitlement.

A:  No - while largely similar in capabilities, these are unique and separate pieces of software, but from a technical and a licensing standpoint.  If you are a Lotus Notes user and want to upgrade your server to run Lotus Sametime 8 code, you should be downloading the Lotus Sametime, Instant Messaging Limited Use code.

Q:  Where exactly do I find this Lotus Sametime, Instant Messaging Limited Use code?

A:  I'm trying to find exactly where this is in Passport Advantage, but try searching for the part number:  C17UNML.   I'll update this post once I confirm which eAssembly it's included in.   Update 12/10:  The Instant Messaging Limited Use code is now available for download from Passport Advantage

Q:  Can I update my Lotus Notes 8.0 embedded IM client to run Lotus Sametime 8.0 instead of Sametime 7.5.1 code?

A:  I'm sorry, but the answer is no.  However, the embedded IM capabilities in Lotus Notes 8.0.1 will be based on Lotus Sametime 8.0.  (And bonus Q:  Shouldn't I just be able to update the embedded IM capabilities without the rest of Notes?  Ideally, yes, but that's not something we can offer just yet.)

Q:  I'm having trouble installing the Mac client.  What's up with that?

A:  There are two versions of the Mac client - one for posting on the network for download, and one if you're just going to install it directly yourself.  Make sure you're selecting the right one for what you're trying to do.

Q:  What's up with the website?  Does Sametime have two websites now?  I saw a new 8.0 website yesterday, but today came across the old one again - did you de-release the products?

A:  We rolled out our cool new website over at yesterday, but it seems that in doing so the old website (which a lot of you might have bookmarked as or didn't get mapped over.  This should all be resolved very shortly - please bear with us in the mean time.    Update 12/10: It looks like the website is back in business again; you should just be seeing the new site no matter where you're coming from.
