US Dept. of Defense awards collaboration contract to IBM

The US Department of Defense has awarded a contract to IBM to use Lotus Sametime for instant messaging and Web conferencing as part of its Net-Centric Enterprise Services program.  (Sametime is no stranger to use in the military, of course.)  Also included are solutions from WebSphere, DB2, and Tivoli.

The Defense Information Systems Agency awarded the first of two Net-Centric Enterprise Services (NCES) collaboration services contracts to IBM in a $17 million deal that calls for the company to provide instant messaging, low-bandwidth text chat and Web conferencing to Defense Department users....

IBM will provide collaboration tools to the department from its Lotus Sametime software suite, which includes instant messaging; Web conferencing; white board tools; application sharing; broadcasting; chat; and audio and video capabilities, [IBM's Linda] Marshall said.

Hats off to the IBM team who worked so hard to make this happen, and congratulations to Carl Tyler and the folks at Instant Technologies, whose Instant TeamSessions is providing real-time persistent chat room capabilities as a core component of the offering.
