Coca-Cola Bottling Co. switches from Oracle to DB2

SearchOracle has a rather detailed account of how Charlotte, NC-based Coca-Cola Bottling Co., the second largest Coke bottler in the US, has switched their SAP environment from Oracle to DB2.

While a financial agreement that SAP arranged for its bottlers contributed to the decision, the company has seen many benefits from the upgrade.  They saw a 40% improvement in compression on their 1 terabyte R3 production database, and has reduced the time to run batch jobs by over 65%, improving overall supply chain efficiency and freeing up its IT staff to focus on other issues.  They were also impressed with how quickly SAP certifies new releases of DB2 compared to Oracle.

Even with no prior DB2 experience, the team was able to get up to speed quickly with education from IBM and SAP, and migration tools provided by SAP helped, too.  The migration of the 22 SAP systems was undertaken with 4 IT staff with the support of one IBMer from IBM Global Services, and was primarily completed between February and April of this year.
