Can I create a password-protected data CD/DVD?

Here's the question of the day:  I'd like to move some files I don't expect to need (much) from my hard drive onto a CD or DVD (MS Office stuff).  However, I'd like to password protect the CD.  Is this possible?  

I'm pretty sure I could use my backup program and encrypt the backup, but I'd really love to just have access to the files when I need them rather than having to go through a restore first.  (I've learned that as soon as I delete/move something, that's when I'll need it again.)

Any suggestions?  Or should I just go the backup route.  Thanks.
